Read from right to left as though it were written Arabic, this space plan devolves from square formality for the private spaces to wild and unrestrained curves for the public spaces. This imitates the nature of Arabic characters which are often firmly rooted but veer without abandon.

The Media is flanked by two sets of stairs. One begins between Kitchen and Dining and is a small spiral which leads up to a private cocktail area for the adults. The opposite side stair is actually a multi-tiered floor which composes the Study meant for the kids. As it hugs a curve, they find unique privacy and simultaneous openness unavailable in a closed bedroom. A modern built-in wall system rides alongside the stair with fold-open desks and bookshelves. An homage to the Eastern practice of sitting on the floor, the multiple tiers allow the body and mind freedom from the confines of traditional "work" space.

Media contains organically shaped benches and side tables facing a slim built in. Tiered acoustical strips cover the top while leaving open spaces for light/air. This creates a theater ceiling while allowing space above the ceiling to look out the window from the cocktail area.

The concept which drove this project is Arabic graphic art. I was mostly inspired by the book "Arabesque: Graphic Design from the Arab World and Persia" by N. Bourquin, Sascha Thomas and Ben Wittner.
